One of the first questions our potential landscape clients want to know when they call our company is: How much does a paver patio cost? The purchase of a paver patio is much like the purchase of a vehicle or even a home. With so many options available, price ranges can vary drastically.
Although this is a very difficult question to answer, we will try to do our best here to explain some general pricing guidelines.
Grade/slope/elevation - Ideally, a patio is going to be flat. Retaining walls or other measures may be needed if the patio is to be positioned on an uneven terrain.
Excavation for base - In order to create a 4-8 inch base of compacted gravel it may be required to excavate existing base or soil. Hauling this soil off-site is an added expense
Base soil type - For traditional pavers, crushed gravel is compacted and then sand installed for a base. Some paver styles require deeper gravel bases and clear crushed gravel for drainage purposes.
Ease of access to site - If the entire project is in the backyard of a gated area, this will increase the time it takes to excavate soil, prep the site, and will limit the type of machinery to be used.
Type and style of paver - There is a wide variety of paver colors and shapes. Typical costs for pavers range from $4-6 per square foot.
Design of different paver sizes - Complicated circles or designs add to the labor of a project. Some paver projects have 3-5 different shapes of pavers that are installed in a pattern. The more complex the pattern, the more time is required for installation. Polysand is used for the joints of the pavers and can also affect the cost of a project depending on color and quantity.
Here are some general guidelines for pricing when it comes to paver patios, based upon dozens of projects we do each year in Whatcom County. These are rough ranges only due to the above variable, but you can receive an exact quote for your project.
